Benue State got its name from the River Benue, which comes from the Batta language word 'Binuwe', meaning 'Mother of Waters'. This river is a big deal and is the second largest in the country, after River Niger.

At its highest, the river gets quite wide and leaves rich, fertile soil on its floodplains that are excellent for farming. This gives rise to why Benue State known for its farming, is called Nigeria's 'Food Basket'.
