The A'nger Attire

The black-and-white pattern carries symbolic weight with many that see it as memorialising a significant part of their survival.

The Tiv attire, known as the a'nger, and pronounced, 'an-gǝ:' has distinctive black-and-white stripes with deep cultural roots. Its origins are tied to the Tiv's history and their connection to the natural world. According to Tiv tradition, the design is inspired by the zebra, an animal they once hunted for its meat and skin during their migratory past.

When the Tiv settled in their current location in the Benue Valley several centuries ago, they found that zebras were not native to the region. To preserve this aspect of their heritage, they began weaving a fabric that mimicked the zebra's black-and-white stripes using locally sourced cotton, a skill they developed over time.

Its Proliferation

The A'nger started as a simple cloth draped around the body, reflecting its practical beginnings. Over the years, it evolved into more elaborate forms, such as robes worn by traditional rulers and elders, symbolising identity and status within the community.

The Kwande area of Tivland is often credited with first adopting and popularising this fabric, from where it spread across Tiv communities and even beyond, embraced by others who admired its cultural significance.

The black-and-white pattern carries symbolic weight as well. Many Tiv see it as representing harmony—black signifying their proud African identity and white embodying peace and unity, much like the zebra, which is viewed as a calm and harmless creature.

In Conclusion

This attire is more than just clothing; it’s a tangible link to their past, a celebration of their resilience, and a marker of their collective identity.

Today, it remains a staple in ceremonies, weddings, and other significant events, continually adapted into modern styles while retaining its historical essence.
